Physical Dependence
Do you think about drugs or alcohol daily? Do you find it nearly impossible not to use them? If that is the case, you may have a physical dependence on them. A brief explanation for dependence like this is that your body seems to crave and require the use of that drug. This is one of the most common reasons men and women cannot stop using, and addiction occurs. At Alina Lodge, we can help you work through your dependence and break free from it. What Is Physical Dependence?
Although people often use these terms interchangeably, there is a difference between dependence and addiction. Addiction is defined as a condition in which a person uses drugs or alcohol on a compulsive basis, and they know there are harmful consequences for doing so. Addiction is recognized as the inability to stop using these drugs.
Physical dependence is a bit different. In this case, the whole body adapts to the drugs or alcohol you are using. As a result of this, it will require more of the drug to gain the same type of high or the same level of satisfaction you’ve been having. This is called building a tolerance to the drug. Physical dependence also is evident when a person stops using. When you suddenly stop using the substances, your body goes through a process of withdrawal.
When Does Physical Dependence Occur?
Physical dependence happens faster than most people believe. It occurs when anyone is engaging in chronic use of the drug or alcohol. This includes illicit drugs but also prescription drugs that are addictive.
Because of this, physical dependence is not considered addiction on its own. However, it is very common for people with addiction also to have a physical dependence.
One of the most difficult things to know about addiction is that it is not always a simple process. For example, prescription drugs can be issued by a doctor and used by a person following the directions provided to them. Yet, those drugs can lead to physical dependence.
Signs of a Physical Dependence on Drugs
Most people with drug and alcohol addiction recognize that they have cravings for the drug. Yet, there are other signs that you may have a physical dependence on them.
- You run out of your prescription sooner than you should.
- Drugs are something you think about a lot during the day.
- You feel pain and illness when you do not take them.
- Missing work or family obligations has become common.
- Doctor shopping, or going from one doctor to the next to get a prescription, is something you’ve engaged in.
Most importantly, consider whether you have to take more of a drug to get the same outcome. If you are taking pain medications, for example, do you feel like you have to take more or take them more often to get the same relief? If so, that’s the development of tolerance.
