Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the perfect time to start talking about how your mental health matters. Mental Health Awareness Month is a time when major programs educate the public about mental health disorders and illnesses, dual diagnosis, and mental health treatment options.

This May, you and your family have an opportunity to participate in Mental Health Awareness Month and to learn more about the treatment options that help you improve your mental health. You have an opportunity to learn, share, and express yourself through several activities and programs during the month of May, online and offline. At Alina Lodge, our team provides outstanding mental health treatment options.

Getting to Know Mental Health Awareness Month

In 2021, Mental Health Awareness Month’s theme is “You Are Not Alone.” The entire program is focused on connecting people within their communities to build strength and resiliency. The National Alliance on Mental Illness hosts a blog, videos, social media engagements, and activities during this time to promote better mental health education and support in communities around the country.

On NAMI’s website, there is an area where you or those you care about may share your stories and read stories that come from others who have dealt with mental health challenges. This is a great way to learn more about mental health and recognize that you are not alone.

What Are Some Mental Health Awareness Month Activities?

During Mental Health Awareness Month, there are many activities that you and those you care about can take part in. There are two important hashtags to use on social media, #NotAlone and #MHAM. Using the #MHAM hashtag, you can share images, stories, and graphics discussing your history with mental health topics. The #NotAlone hashtag is for messages and graphics within your community. Using it, you can share your personal story with the National Alliance on Mental Illness and your community of like-minded individuals.

Some additional Mental Health Awareness Month activities to use at home or on the job include:

  • Giving out stress-relieving items, like slime or stress balls, to people in the office
  • Hosting a contest and making the award something mental-health related, such as a weight set or day out at a spa to relax
  • Sending those you care about something fun that sets a positive tone for the workday
  • Looking up the hashtags above and reading through mental health tips and stories from others
  • Host a watch party that shares information about mental health
  • Join NAMIWalks Your Way on May 22, which is a virtual walk available throughout the country

These are just a few ideas to help you get started this May, but plenty of other mental health treatment options are available.

Are There Any Special Dates to Remember During Mental Health Awareness Month?

Some specific mental health dates to remember during Mental Health Awareness Month include:

  • May 7: National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day
  • May 9 to 15: National Women’s Health Week
  • May 13: Mental Health Day of Action

These are just some of the special days with Mental Health Awareness Month activities planned.
