Detox is the medically supervised process of clearing alcohol or other drugs from the body while withdrawal symptoms are managed by clinical staff. At Alina Lodge, detox happens on our Blairstown campus, and guests move directly into residential treatment when they are medically ready.
The difference matters more than it sounds. Many people detox in one facility and then wait, sometimes for days, for a bed somewhere else. The gap is where a lot of recoveries end before they start. Here, stabilizing and starting treatment happen in the same place, with the same team.
Alina Lodge has been a nonprofit residential program since 1957, built on structure, honesty and abstinence. Detox is where that structure begins.
What Is Detox?
Detox is the process of allowing the body to clear alcohol or other drugs while withdrawal symptoms are managed under medical supervision. Withdrawal varies widely. It depends on the substance, how much was used and for how long, and on age, health and history.
Some withdrawal is uncomfortable. Some of it is dangerous. Alcohol and benzodiazepines in particular are substances where stopping without medical oversight carries real risk, which is why withdrawal management comes first rather than as an afterthought.
At our New Jersey detox center, each guest's detox plan is built around their own medical picture. Staff monitor vital signs and manage symptoms throughout. Detox is not treatment on its own. It clears the way for the work that follows.
Who Detox at Alina Lodge Is For
Detox here is for adults 18 and older who are actively using alcohol or other drugs and need medical supervision before they can begin residential treatment. It is a fit for people who want to start and finish in one place rather than be handed off between facilities.
It is often the right first step for guests entering our long-term treatment program, where extended time matters and a clean medical start matters more.
Guests who are also managing a mental health condition are assessed for our dual diagnosis program during detox, so the treatment plan accounts for both from day one.

What to Expect in Medically Supervised Detox
Detox at Alina Lodge is medically staffed, not just supervised. Physician and nursing coverage support each guest's withdrawal management plan, with clinical monitoring around the clock. Vital signs are monitored throughout, and medication is used to manage withdrawal and cravings where it is clinically appropriate.
Because detox and residential treatment run on the same campus with the same clinical team, nothing has to be re-explained to a new provider when a guest steps down into treatment.
- Call admissions: Registration begins over the phone. Our team asks about current substance use, medical history and current medications, and confirms whether detox is the right starting point.
- Complete a health screening: Before arrival, we review your medications and substance use history to plan the medical side of your detox.
- Arrive and be evaluated: Our medical staff assesses every incoming guest for urgent medical needs and finalizes the detox plan. Transportation to campus can be arranged in advance.
- Stabilize under supervision: Clinical staff monitor vital signs and manage withdrawal symptoms throughout. Where clinically appropriate, our team may use medication to manage cravings and withdrawal.
- Move into residential treatment: When the medical team clears it, guests transition into the residential program on the same campus. No transfer, no waiting list, no break in support.
How Long Detox Takes
There is no fixed number, and any program that gives you one before assessing you is guessing. Detox length depends on the substance, how long and how heavily it was used, whether more than one substance is involved, and each guest's medical history and current health.
Our medical team sets the timeline based on how a guest is actually doing, not on a schedule.
What we can tell you is what happens next. Detox is the front end of a longer stay. Length of stay in residential treatment is clinical rather than administrative, and it ranges from 28 days to a year or more depending on progress.
