Eating Disorder Recovery

At Alina Lodge we are aware of the many co-occurring disorders that our students struggle with, in addition to their substance abuse. These combined issues add confusing and complicated components to treatment. But it is necessary to address these co-occurring disorders to ensure a strong recovery.

The team at Alina Lodge understands that eating disorders may contribute to relapse for our students. Poor body image can lead to destructive habits that may include using stimulants to control weight.

… our students learn to accept and appreciate their new healthy body which often includes some weight gain…

A side effect of drug use is often a low body weight – which students have openly admitted – is one of the reasons they liked their drugs. It is important therefore, that our students learn to accept and appreciate their new healthy body which often includes some weight gain.

Those with eating disorders must stay conscious of signs indicating a relapse in their eating disorder. These signs might include:

  • obsession with weight, body and/or food
  • using over-the-counter weight-loss medication
  • preoccupation with the numbers on the scale
  • over-exercising
  • using laxatives
  • engaging in other eating disorder behaviors

These are the issues we educate and discuss with our students to help them to avoid relapse.

While they are here, the students who are struggling with an eating disorder attend a weekly Eating Disorder group and are given an opportunity to leave lunch early and spend time together as a group. It is important for the students to have support while they are here in treatment.

They are also encouraged to look for support groups, such as Overeaters Anonymous, Eating Disorders Anonymous, or Anorexics and Bulimics Anonymous, to enhance their recovery when they graduate from the Lodge. All of our students are important to us, and we strive to tackle individual problems that may make them vulnerable to relapse.
