Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

The theme of Mental Health Awareness Month 2019 is #4Mind4Body, reflecting the relationship between mind and body in health. In the words on the ancient Romans, “Mens sana in corpore sano” (“A sound mind in a sound body”).

Dr. Daniel Greenfield
Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed for the month of May since 1949, in an effort to educate and destigmatize the public and its all-too-prevalent confusion and fear about mental illness. Combining mental illness with substance use disorders (i.e. ‘dual diagnosis‘) a high prevalence, or proportionate – upwards of 35% of the adult population of the country experiences either or both of these conditions during a lifetime.

At the operating entities of the Little Hill Foundation, Alina Lodge, Haley House, and the North Warren Counseling Center, our experience echoes the country’s. Although the focus of our work is with chemically dependent individuals, we have our fair share of individuals with concomitant (‘occurring’) mental illnesses, and of course, a significant proportion of individuals who are admitted on, or subsequently treated with psychiatric (‘psychotropic’) medications. Medical and psychiatric care is supervised and monitored by a full-time Nursing Department and a part-time internist and psychiatrist, both also board-certified in Addiction Medicine.

In keeping with the theme of Mental Health Month for 2019, we focus at the Little Hill Foundation on sufficient time (“tincture of time”) for healing, holistic medicine and nutritional care, the 12-Step model for recovery, and a bucolic and calming environment: “mens sana in corpore sano”.
